What is an IPI number?
An IPI (Interested Parties Information) number is a unique 11-digit identifier assigned to songwriters, composers, lyricists, and music publishers by their performing rights organization (PRO). IPI codes are managed globally by SUISA on behalf of CISAC and used by every PRO worldwide — ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, PRS, GEMA, SACEM, JASRAC, and others — to track who collects royalties on a musical work.
How do I find someone’s IPI number?
Search by songwriter or publisher name at the top of this page, or paste an 11-digit IPI code directly. Credits.fm cross-references the CISAC/SUISA registry, MusicBrainz, the MLC, and other authoritative sources to surface verified IPI numbers along with works, recordings, and co-writers.
Is an IPI number the same as a CAE number?
Yes — IPI codes were formerly called CAE numbers (Compositeur, Auteur, Editeur). The system was renamed but the numbers themselves are identical. Some older databases still label them "CAE/IPI" for backward compatibility.
How is an IPI different from an ISNI?
IPI codes (11 digits, managed by CISAC) identify a rights-holder identity for royalty management. ISNIs (16 digits, ISO 27729, managed by the ISNI International Agency) identify a public creative identity across every industry — music, books, film, television. The same person can hold both: an IPI for collecting royalties and an ISNI for unified identity.
Is the IPI lookup free?
Yes. Every IPI search on ipi.fm is free with no authentication or signup required, including the JSON API at credits.fm/api.
